A beige country style house with green lawn

People often throw housewarming parties once they move into a new spot to introduce friends and family members to their new home. It might not be the first thing on your list to do when you unpack, but you may be considering having a small get together to show everyone your new digs. We talk about how you can throw a memorable and exciting housewarming party.

Step 1: Wait until your house is in good enough shape to invite people over

Sometimes people have unpacking parties, but if you’re not planning on an unpacking party, you’ll want to wait until your boxes are unpacked and your furniture is in all the right spots before you throw a party inviting people into your new home. We know a new home is exciting, and you can’t wait to invite people over, but wait a few weeks and spend that time planning instead.

Step 2: Decide if you want to buy food or make it BYO

Most people will likely expect food to be at any party, so be prepared to have some food no matter what you decide. Having a BYO event or a potluck will help take some of the financial stress off of you and allow people to bring a variety of goods. Expect to be the one bringing drinks no matter what, however.

Step 3: Pick a great date

Keep in mind that holidays are going to make it tough for all the people you want to show up to your party. If you’re considering throwing a housewarming party around Christmas or Thanksgiving, you may want to wait, or perhaps convert it into a “holiday” party – theme and all.

Step 4: Invite people in a highly visible manner

In this case, you may want to skip Facebook. Many people don’t see event invites on Facebook. Send via email or text, or if you have addresses and time, you can send out a postcard inviting each person for a nice personal touch!

Step 5: Invite your neighbors!

If you’re having a housewarming party, this is a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors! Shoot a quick invite in case they want to stop by and say hello.

Step 6: Thank people after the event

Many people bring gifts for housewarming parties, so be prepared with written thank yous or at the least a heartfelt text after the party dissipates. If you take photos during the party, thank everyone at once for attending by posting on Facebook for your friends to see.
