Boxes

We know that you want the best person (and the best price!) when it comes time to move. But what really is the best price for the best moving company? We’ll tell you how to compare moving companies and to make the best decision for your move.

Comparing Quotes

Your first step will be to find movers that are in your area that can do your move. You will want to ask the moving company if they are available to move you on your date, and then ask for a quote. It is OK to ask more than one moving company! We expect that you will be shopping around to make sure that you are getting a fair price for your move. Your preferred mover may also be unavailable during your date, so it’s important to shop as far ahead of time as possible.

A professional moving company will take some information from you and then come to your location to give you the most accurate quote they can. They will inspect the furniture, boxes, and any other items you need to have moved. They will also collect information about where you are moving to. Remember that no moving company can give a very accurate quote over the phone or via email — most moving companies will want to check in person.

When you get your quote, you will want to compare the rates. Try not to just pick the mover with the lowest price, and instead take a moment to compare them for what their services offer. Rates can vary by hourly basis, how many people they’ll need to complete your move, and some other factors.

Comparing Services

While resisting the temptation to just go with the cheapest mover, you will want to compare what you’re getting with each mover. Are you getting an insured company? How much do they insure up to? What happens if an item breaks? Does the company take money up front before a job is performed? What kind of truck will be used and how will your items be secured? Make sure all of this checks out before deciding on the cheapest mover.

Comparing Reviews

It’s great that you can go on the internet and look at the reviews for movers to help you decide who to pick. While we want to issue a word of caution here as any disgruntled person can go and leave a negative review for a company. Still, if the company appears to be highly recommended with people leaving actual reviews (with actual words, not just a star rating, describing the service they received) then you may have a winner. Be cautious of companies that have a very high star rating and lots of five star reviews with very little content describing why they thought the company did a good job. It’s possible for companies to “inflate” their review rating online — especially if they are a shifty company.

Ask the Community

It’s never a bad idea to ask your local community who they suggest for a mover. If you already received quotes and are having trouble deciding, sometimes asking the community can help you solidify your choice. If a bunch of people suggest the mover you were considering, then you know you’ve got a good mover on your hands.
