One question you may be asking yourself when you’re moving is “do I need to keep all of this junk?” If you’re going through all of your things and packing them, chances are you’ll want to do some cleaning too. You’re not going to want to tote junk from house to house, and why carry the extra boxes if you don’t need to? What is the best way to clean out your stuff before you move?
Will it fit?
One thing you can ask yourself while assessing your old belongings is will it fit? This is especially true if you’re downsizing. Will that L shaped couch fit in your 500 square foot studio space? Probably not. If you’re not sure, measure! Also consider will it fit with your theme or style of your new house. Vintage, old timey furniture might not fit in so well with a modern, contemporary feel home. If you’re not attached to it, it might be time to toss it or donate it.
Does anyone use it?
When’s the last time you used it? If it’s not a thing that can be used, when’s the last time you looked at it or it served a purpose? If it never gets used (and never will), perhaps consider tossing it or donating it. You may also want to consider if it’s something that’s used annually, and would it do better to stay in storage rather than in your living space.
Will I miss it if it’s gone?
We know that objects can have a lot of sentimental value, but something you’ve put in a box and haven’t even thought about until you unearthed it again may go without being missed if you toss or donate it. If it’s something you or your family aren’t incredibly attached to, consider letting it go rather than moving it from place to place.
